VFLW Seagulls take on weather and Essendon in second practice match
It was a typical winter day at Williamstown Football Ground as our women’s team walked away winners against the Essendon Bombers.
In wet and wild conditions the effort shown against the Bombers was resilient, as they walked away 12-point winners, defeating Bombers 3.4 – 22 to 1.4 – 10.
Despite the terrible conditions – one point during the third quarter of the game, play was called off for five minutes – there were positives signs from the players today.
Ruckman Racheal Achampong played a brilliant game, contesting well around the ground winning most hit-outs and following up her hit-outs with crucial second efforts.
With the wind containing the game to one side of the ground, the midfield and backline worked vigorously to keep the ball out of the defensive half.
Andrea Cameron and Caitlyn Balshaw played their roles perfectly, with Balshaw able to kick the sealing goal in the last quarter.
Lauren Suleiman played a terrific game in the midfield and was rewarded with a goal.
Amanda Walsh was threatening in the forward half, applying great pressure to the opposition whenever the ball entered the fifty.
Looking ahead to next week the women’s team have a bye and won’t feature until two weeks’ time when they take on the Southern Saints.
Williamstown: 3.4 (22)
Essendon: 1.4. (10)
Goals: Suleiman, Balshaw, Walsh 1
