Last-gasp goal sinks Seagulls

A last-minute goal has snatched victory away from Williamstown in their round nine contest against Hawthorn.

Williamstown had led for majority of the game until Hawthorn came from nine points down at the final break to walk away with a four-point victory at Box Hill City Oval. It was a gallant performance from the Seagulls, with their pressure and tackling tenacity causing headaches for the second placed Hawks. Their opening quarter was the best display of their skill so far this season, kicking four-goals straight to Hawthorn's one.

Rebecca Dardengo played one of her finest games in the blue and gold and was awarded best afield honours. Dardengo battled hard to shut down her opponent and defended extremely well. Skipper, Sarah Chapman led from the front with her tackling pressure around the contest – earning second best honours.

Jess Duffin and Jasmine Garner again performed brilliantly despite being heavily monitored by their opposition. Garner kicked the goal of the day with a long-distance banana kick which bounced through for goal in the third quarter. Duffin spoke to Williamstownfc.com after the game and acknowledged it would be a tough but valuable learning curve for the team.

Emily Paterno showed off her skills with a sensational mark as well as kicking two goals to accompany her superb performance. Youngster, Isabelle Porter was classy and kicked a goal and looked dangerous with ball in hand.

Williamstown’s round nine clash also featured three first gamer’s, with Jamilla Cranny, Krystyn Raymundo and Sharnie Whiting all making their debut today. Whiting kicked her first ever goal to top off a great day for the future players of the club.

Hawthorn’s Rebecca Beeson starred for the home side, kicking the final two goals of the game to help her side claim victory.

Looking ahead to next week, the VFLW Seagulls will travel to IKON park to face Carlton.
