2020 VFL guernsey numbers revealed

.

There are plenty of fresh faces meaning plenty of new jumper numbers to be unveiled ahead of the 2020 season.

Developing key utility Jaylon Thorpe will inherit the number 10 guernsey which was vacated by best and fairest winner and former swingman Leigh Masters.

Thorpe said he was humbled to wear the guernsey worn by Masters for the past six seasons.

“When Leigh asked me to wear his number going forward, it was very humbling as he was certainly one I looked up to in terms of the way he went about his footy at both ends of the ground,” Thorpe said.

“Leigh was a big part of our culture here at the club. I just liked the way he went about his footy, he goes about his footy very quietly, a bit like myself, and made sure he carried himself in a very professional manner which is something I have learnt to do off him."

Also headlining the changes this season is 2015 premiership player Nick Sing who returns to jumper number 7 which was worn by Essendon draftee Mitch Hibberd last during 2020. Sing had previously worn the number between 2012 and 2017.

Frankston recruit Corey Rich will wear number 3, vacated by premiership forward Sam Dunell. Rich will be looking to emulate Dunell’s endurance ability and impact in the forward half.

Jack Charleston’s number 17 and Willie Wheeler’s number 24 have been replaced by Nick Buykx and Tom Mundy respectively, with both Jack and Willie nominating each player on the way they went about their game in reflection of their own careers.

The club will also be retiring the number 49 worn by premiership player Nick Meese, honouring his service to the club.

Former Adelaide Crow Paul Hunter will wear number 11 formally worn by Jack Dorgan, whilst Gold Coast Suns recruit Jack Leslie will wear number 12. Dashing defender Sam Murray will run out in number 13, replacing Tom Schnerring, with Murray’s brother Nick wearing number 40.

Box Hill recruit Luke Meadows will take over the number 1 guernsey from Jason Pongracic, while James Tsitas replaces Ben Kennedy in the number 2 jumper.

Subiaco forward Thomas Edwards-Baldwin replaces Oliver Tate in number 15 with returning Seagull Tristan Davies pulling on the number 19.

NAB League graduates Daly Andrews, Lachlan Stapleton, Mitch Mellis, Charlie Dean and Daniel Mott will wear 32, 33, 34, 35 and 37 respectively with departure of Liam Carter (33) and Jhye Baddeley-Kelly (35), whilst Joel Ottavi (34) has moved to 20 and Nick Ebinger (37) moving to replace Jaylon Thorpe at 26.

Liam Hunt will move up into number 6 vacated by Sam Martyn, whilst Nick Fothergill moves into number 28 and Max Philpot into 38 has part of the number re-shuffle.

Young recruits in Kieren Parnell and Dan O'Dwyer will wear number 44 and 46 respectively to round out the changes.
