Brave Development side pipped by Demons
Williamstown's development side almost staged one of the greatest fight-backs in their season opener on Monday.
Trailing by six goals at three-quarter time, a spirited Seagulls outfit fought their way in front in the late stages of the match, only to succumb to Casey by eleven points, 10.11 (71) to 12.10 (82).
2016 grand finalists Casey jumped out of the blocks with a five goal to one opening term, before the home side pushed back in the second quarter to shave the margin to 19 points at the main break.
Casey again pushed the margin out to 36 points at the final change and seemingly looked home, before an onslaught of Seagulls goals, including two from big man Luke Goetz, got Williamstown right back into the match.
Despite not getting the four points, the Seagulls had a number of strong contributors on the day.
Lachlan Schultz was dynamic through the middle, as he continues to push for senior selection, while ruck recruit Jackson Gray showed promising signs in the air as well as laying a number of bone-crunching tackles.
Jason Pongracic provided an experienced head, leading the way by winning plenty of contested ball and making his presence around the contest felt.
Key defender Liam Carter showed that the senior experience gained in the pre-season has enhanced his game with a terrific performance in the defensive 50, along with Jake Owen who provided a strong target to kick to inside 50.
Swinging between the back and forward lines, Liam McMahon showed off his versatility as well, kicking a clever dribbling goal as well as providing plenty of attack from the back flank.
The development side will look towards Saturday now, when they face the Northern Blues at Preston City Oval at 11.30am.
