Straford turning heads in midfield

Williamstown on-baller Eliza Straford showed further growth in her game on Sunday as she and her teammates went down to an in-form Cats side at La Trobe University.

It took until late Thursday to find out just where this VFLW match would take place, and the two sides were lucky enough to run on the brand new surface at La Trobe University in the heart of their state-of-the-art sporting complex.

The wind would make the game unpredictable and an exciting one as the game got underway.

Immediately, the Seagulls started on the front foot winning the clearance battles and dominating the inside 50s. Coming back from her time away Emily Gardner kicked her first goal in the VFLW from a tight angle in the dying stages of the first quarter to keep the game to within a goal.

The second quarter was going to be tough as the wind changed direction to favour Geelong's forwards, yet the girls played astonishingly well in the back line and this is where Straford really started to turn heads.

After another intercept and counter attack begun through Danica Pedersen, Straford collected the ball and completed a fantastic run though the middle of the pristine ground, shaking two opponents on the way.

Megan Williamson once again stepped up with her midfield companion and on several occasions would apply the perfect tackle or shepherd to see Straford capitalise on every opportunity.

The Seagulls held the Cats to only two goals in the opening half as the margin was only separated by one kick.

Williamstown continued its competitiveness and had plenty of possession, but the momentum fell of Geelong in the second half.

The Cats pulled away in the final quarter yet as the final siren blew there was large praise for the girls for their efforts this Sunday.

The Seagulls will look to put together everything they have learnt throughout this season in hunt for a final win against Essendon next week in their last game of the season.

Final Score:

Williamstown Seagulls 1.0 (6)

Geelong Cats 8.4 (52)
