Development keep season alive with win over Coburg

Williamstown's development team have kept their season alive after defeating Coburg by 38 points at Piranha Park yesterday.

The Seagulls led at every change to claim the 14.12 (96) to 8.10 (58) victory, which was their sixth of the season.

Williamstown kept Coburg scoreless in a dominant first term before going on to lead the match by ten goals at three-quarter time.

The Lions fought back in the final term to win the quarter kicking five goals to two, but the damage was already done. The Seagulls now sit just half a game outside of the finals race, with their destiny sitting in their own hands in the run home to finals.

Jake Owen played arguably his best of the season predominately in defence, with his intercept contested marking a real highlight for the day. He was aided down back by the strong form of Brodie Romensky who also played one of his better games for the club, winning the vast majority of one-on-one contests he was involved in.

Up forward, Nick Ebinger kicked a season-high five goals for the Seagulls in an impressive showing with his contested marking and accuracy in front of goal, while Christian Buykx-Smith also featured heavily clunking plenty of marks and adding a couple of goals to his own tally.

Mitch Norton's evasiveness and ability to break the game open from half-back and through the middle was vital to his team's strong start, and midfield partner Lachlan Bramble showed that he has grown in confidence since his stint in the senior lineup, kicking three goals and having a hand in many others.

Williamstown will now have an opportunity to jump back into the top four should they beat Werribee at Burbank Oval this Sunday.

Coburg: 8.10 (58)

Williamstown: 14.12 (96)

Goals: Ebinger 5, Bramble 3, Buykx-Smith 2, Wilkinson 2, Smith, Dundon.

Best: Owen, Ebinger, Norton, Buykx-Smith, Romensky, Bramble.
