Williamstown hosts another successful NJT cricket match

Downer Oval played host to another successful National Jockeys Trust T20 cricket match on Monday.

The annual event is played in Williamstown between some of Australia’s leading jockeys and a range of media personalities and sports stars.

This year, Damien Oliver led his Touchstone Farm Jockeys side to victory, reaching 177 runs and bowling out the Racing All Stars for 129 in response.

Among the other jockeys were Linda Meech, Michael Walker and Luke Currie, while former Australian cricketer Bryce McGain captained the All Stars.

Craig Newitt (2/8) was dangerous with the ball in hand for the jockeys with Sean Cooper and Oliver retiring on 22 and 20 respectively, while Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien scored 20 for the All Stars.

The event’s proceeds will be going towards animal welfare organisations providing urgent assistance to wildlife and livestock affected by bushfires in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and South Australia.

The event was also largely assisted by Williamstown Cricket Club whose efforts cannot go understated.

Since 2004, the NJT has provided more than $4 million in assistance to more than 290 jockeys and the families of jockeys who have been lost.

Williamstown Football Club is proud to have supported the event again in 2020 and looks forward to another edition in 2021 and beyond.
