Development team storms into Grand Final

Williamstown's Development team have roared into a grand final after defeating arch rivals Port Melbourne by 28 points at Fortburn Stadium yesterday.

In what was a tight tussle over the first three quarters, the Seagulls overrun their opponents in the final term to notch up a 14.8 (92) to 9.10 (64) victory.

Williamstown will now take on Casey for the title of the last ever Development League premier, with the competition ceasing to exist from next season.

It's been an incredible late season run from Williamstown, who have won five of their last six games to get to this point.

It was a perfect day for footy and the opening quarter was perfect evidence of that, with both sides using the ball well and hitting the scoreboard with efficiency with 7.1 kicked between them. The Seagulls held the early advantage but for the first three quarters the game never got to a point where either side was able to really break free.

With the Borough seemingly taking the momentum into the final term, Williamstown quickly wrestled it back, kicking a couple of early goals in the final term to break the back of their opponents, before kicking away to the 28-point win after kicking six goals to two.

Key forward Jake Owen was immense up forward, booting four goals (including two in the final term) and clunking a number of big contested marks. He was well supported by Nick Ebinger who helped kick start the game with a couple of early goals, and Tristan Davies who continued to provide a presence inside 50, bringing the ball to ground when he didn't mark it to bring the small forwards into the game.

Ed Carr was again a huge difference maker in the middle, with his wealth of finals experience proving vital, directing traffic out on the ground but also winning plenty of the contested ball himself.

Key defenders Kyle Gray and Josh Minogue read the play beautifully in the defensive 50, chopping off a number of Borough attacks, particularly in the second half when the game was well and truly in the balance.

Williamstown will take on Casey at Fortburn Stadium (North Port Oval) in the Development League Grand Final this Sunday at 11.30am.
