Bewley, Newman off to the State Combine
Two of Williamstown's brightest young stars are off to the State Combine at year's end, after being nominated by AFL clubs who are keen to have a further look at the talented pair.
Brett Bewley, 22, and Josh Newman, 22, will undergo a series of testing in front of the watchful eyes of AFL recruiters ahead of the 2017 AFL National, Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts later in the year.
Making his way to Williamstown via the Western Jets and now into his fourth season of VFL football, Bewley has grown season on season to becoming one of the competition's most prolific ball winners and most damaging users.
After having a break out season in 2016 where he played every game averaging over 20 disposals a contest, Bewley has blossomed again, averaging 26 disposals, 11 contested possessions, four inside 50's and four tackles a game.
It's these numbers that saw him win VFL state team selection earlier this year and at 187cm with a booming left foot kick, he has all the attributes to make it at the next level.
Newman's career path has been very different to Bewley's, starting his Under 18 career with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup before playing on the other side of the bay in Frankston for four seasons.
When Frankston's VFL license was revoked at the end of the 2016 season, Newman made the move to Williamstown to continue his VFL career after winning the Dolphins' best and fairest in 2016.
Newman has quickly established himself as one of Williamstown's most important players in the back half, playing the 'quarterback' role in setting up many of Williamstown's attacks while also possessing many great defensive traits.
Newman has averaged 18 disposals a game in the blue and gold along with seven contested possessions and four marks per contest, and like Bewley was also rewarded for his strong season to date with VFL state team selection earlier in the year.
Dandenong Stingray Tom Murphy is also among the State Combine invitees, after impressing throughout the year in the TAC Cup, and in his three games as 23rd man for the Seagulls.
