Bulldogs too strong for Seagulls under lights

The Western Bulldogs proved to be too strong for the Seagulls in what was a historic VFLW season opener.

A large crowd came out to support the women in what was the first women's night match at Downer Oval.

The players didn't disappoint in what was an entertaining contest.

The Seagulls had plenty of impressive patches throughout the game, including a second quarter performance which kept the Bulldogs to just one behind.

Unfortunately the Bulldogs played more consistently throughout the game and runaway with the game late in the third quarter.

Erin Meade was fantastic, showcasing improved tackling skills in a backline that was under pressure all night.

Co-captain Jacinta Reid played plenty of tackles and got a number of clearances throughout the game.

The Seagulls had eleven debutants which all showed positive signs throughout the match.

Of those eleven is Western Jets player Ruby Tripodi.

She got plenty of the ball in the midfield in a match which she will learn a lot from.

Megan Williamson and Annabelle Shannon both gave it their all in the midfield and will look to do the same next week.

Sharnie Whiting scored our only goal for the match in the second quarter and was switched into defence for the last quarter.

This gave her the opportunity get more of the ball and use her foot skills to rebound the ball out of defence.

The Seagulls take on the Casey Demons next Sunday at Downer Oval.

SCORE:

Williamstown: 1.3.9

Western Bulldogs: 8.8.56
