Seagulls go down to Werribee

Senior Match Report

Williamstown have suffered their first defeat of the year with a 15-point loss over a resounding Werribee who kicked eight goals to one in the final half at Deakin University on Saturday.

After what was a hard-fought battle in hot, dry conditions, it was Werribee who walked away with the early-season bragging rights against Williamstown, winning 11.10 - 76 to 8.13 61..

Both teams displayed glimpses of their best footy, with the Seagulls beginning the game in blistering fashion – kicking the opening six goals of the game – both Monkhurst and Schultz slotting two goals each.

Williamstown played free-flowing football whilst being able to nullify Werribee’s attack, keeping them to just four inside 50’s for the opening term.

In the second term Werribee got their hands back on the footy by applying fierce pressure on their opposition, helping them kick the only four goals of the quarter to bridge the margin back to 17-points

The start of the second half saw Werribee grab total control of the game with their high number of intercept marks and ability to counter-attack from defence.

Having gone goalless since the end of the first quarter, Williamstown kicked their only second half major from a Buykx-Smith snap 20-metres out from goals.

Heading into the final quarter Williamstown held onto a 10-point lead, but with four final quarter goals Werribee proved far too strong on the day.

To add further salt into the wound, Norton and Minogue were both helped from the ground, with Norton receiving a knock to his knee and Minogue injuring his shoulder.

As we set aside today’s loss, we cast our eyes toward next weekend as we face-off against North Melbourne at Arden Street.

Final Score

Williamstown: 8.13 (61)

Werribee: 11.10. (76)

Goals: Schutlz, Monkhorst 2, Richards, Kempster, Buykx-Smith, George
