Hawks Development too strong for Seagulls
Williamstown's development team were taken down by Box Hill to the tune of six goals in yesterday's clash at Box Hill City Oval.
A nine goal to four run over the second and third quarters to Box Hill proved to be too much for the Seagulls to reel in, eventually falling 11.8 (74) to 15.20 (110).
The match was a tightly fought affair in the early stages with just three goals kicked in the opening term, before Box Hill opened up a 32-point halftime, and 50-point three-quarter time lead.
To Williamstown's credit, they played out the game strongly, kicking six goals to four in a free-flowing final term but ultimately the damage was already done.
Despite the loss, Williamstown had some great contributors on the day, headlined by Mitch Norton who was the Seagulls best. Norton provided plenty of run and dash for his team and found plenty of the ball while also adding a goal to his name. As good as Norton was on the outside, Corey Yeo was just as good on the inside, winning a lion's share of contested footy and pushing forward at times to provide a marking target around the half-forward line.
Premiership defender Nick Sing was a poised and experienced head in defence for the young Seagulls, while Tom Condon showed plenty of tricks up forward and enjoyed a successful run through the midfield at times as well.
Key position players Josh Minogue and Daylan Kempster were used at both ends of the ground during the day, with Minogue's contested marking a real highlight. Kempster was again very solid in defence but also kicked his first goal in Seagulls colours when moved forward.
The Seagulls have a bye this weekend, before taking on the ladder leading Port Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday 22nd July.
Box Hill: 15.20 (110)
Williamstown: 11.8 (74)
Goals: Minogue 3, Noonan 2, Knight, Wilkinson, Norton, Sing, Kempster, Buykx-Smith.
Best: Norton, Sing, Condon, Kempster, Minogue, Yeo.
