Williamstown’s start to the 2024 season

July 16, 2024

Round 9, Williamstown vs Carlton

The last season Williamstown Football Club’s VFL side was 6-1 after seven rounds was 2010.

Currently sitting second on the ladder in the 2024 season, Williamstown’s only loss has been to top-of-the-ladder western suburb rivals, the Footscray Bulldogs.

Senior VFL Coach Justin Plapp is pleased with his team’s repeated ability to adjust and get the game on their terms when things aren’t going their way but as his post-match discussions often address, they are still working towards consistent four-quarter performances.

Despite the strong start to the season, their tendency to deviate from their high-pressure, contest-driven brand of football, hasn’t gone unnoticed. While they have quarters where they overtly dominate through sheer contest and effort, there are patches where they “drop off”, as Plapp says.

Plapp is really happy with the team’s recent efficiency in front of goal and ability to execute off the back of pressure, but he poses that synergy may be the answer to a consistent four-quarters of football in the games to come.

With a significant influx of new players this year, synergy was expected to take some time however a solid foundation of a successful season has already been laid, so the potential of the team once they find this cohesion is really an exciting prospect to the club.

As they prepare to face Carlton in Round 8 this Saturday, the Seagulls are eager to secure another home win to continue their streak and build on their success through the middle of the season.
