A look at six performances by WFC VFL and VFLW listed players in local leagues over the weekend of the 23rd of August.
Max Philpot – PEGS Senior Men’s (VAFA Premier C)
Backing up his standout game from two rounds ago, Max Philpot was again a major contributor for PEGS despite their 16-point loss to Marcellin. He collected 34 disposals, with half contested, showing his ability to win the ball in tight. Philpot also took 6 marks, drove forward with 6 inside 50s, added 6 clearances and kicked 2 goals, finishing with 159 ranking points. With one round left, PEGS will look to close out their season on a strong note.
Hamish Morrison – Airport West Football Club (EDFL Premier Division)
Hamish Morrison was again influential in Airport West’s huge 168-point win over Deer Park, a result that sealed their place in finals. He collected 27 disposals at an impressive 85% efficiency, showing composure with ball in hand. Morrison also pulled down 8 marks, including 5 intercept grabs, and added 5 rebound 50s in a strong all-round performance. Airport West now face Deer Park again in this week’s elimination final, with Morrison’s form shaping as a key factor in their push.
Hamish Murphy – North Heidelberg Football Club (NFNL Division 1)
Hamish Murphy was one of North Heidelberg’s best in their heartbreaking 11-point loss to Banyule, a result that ended their season. After conceding 27 unanswered points in the opening quarter, the Bulldogs were always chasing and couldn’t quite bridge the gap. Murphy fought hard across four quarters, finishing with 29 disposals, 7 marks and 124 ranking points. While the result was disappointing, his consistent ball-winning and composure stood out in a performance that capped off a strong campaign.
Talia Motta, Amelia Marino and Yasmin Welsford – Strathmore Football Club (EDFL Women’s Division One)
Strathmore claimed the premiership with a nail-biting six-point win over Burnside Heights, decided only in the final term. Talia Motta was best afield, kicking three goals including the match-winner in the last quarter to seal the game. Yasmin Welsford also earned recognition as one of Strathmore’s best, standing tall in key moments as the contest went down to the wire, with scores level at three-quarter time. After an interrupted season through travel and injury, it was fantastic to see Amelia Marino back contributing on the big stage.
