Brian, affectionately known as ‘Couta’, coached the Under 19 team from 1991, taking over the reins from Bruce Leighton, until the end of the 1993 season, the penultimate year of the VFA Thirds’ competition.
The team failed to make the finals in Brian’s first two seasons as coach, but in his last year they won 14 of the 22 home-and-away games to reach the play-off’s, the only side of the three grades in the Club to reach the finals.
The team defeated Werribee in the elimination final (113-99, Craig Sheedy 6 goals), Box Hill by 92 points in the first-semi (151-59, Doug Hart 6 goals) and Sandringham in the preliminary final (130-110).
They faced the arch-enemy, Port Melbourne, at Princes’ Park in the grand final but sadly went down 12.11 to 6.8 on a wet day, which brought down the curtains on Couta’s coaching career with Williamstown.
Brian was, of course, the proud father of Williamstown player, Troy Carrick, who inherited the nickname of ‘Couta’ from his father. Troy played a total of 87 senior games and kicked 21 goals from 1994 until the end of the 2001 season in the number 7 & 11 jumpers.
Troy won the best & fairest award in the Thirds in Brian’s last season as coach and also played in the VFA Thirds’ representative team the same year. Troy was selected on the wing in the WFC 1990’s Team of the Decade.
Sincere condolences are extended by the Club to Troy and the entire Carrick family at this sad time.
RIP Brian.
