Williamstown’s VFL side produced a strong performance to defeat St Kilda by four points in an entertaining practice match, continuing an impressive pre-season for the Seagulls.
Williamstown started sharply, taking early momentum through goals to Josh D’Intinosante, Jack Toner and Josh Hamilton. Strong forward pressure and clean ball movement helped the Seagulls control territory, before Kallan Dawson added another goal in the final two minutes of the opening term, leaving the quarter time score 4.3 (27) to 1.2 (8).
St Kilda responded strongly in the second quarter, kicking the opening two goals before eventually taking the lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Dawson added his second for Williamstown, but the Saints carried the momentum into the main break leading 7.4 (46) to 5.7 (37).
After halftime Williamstown lifted, with Joel Fitzgerald kicking the opening goal of the third quarter before Hamilton added his second for the match. Despite some inaccuracy in front of goal, the Seagulls created repeated scoring opportunities and worked their way back in front, leading 8.14 (62) to 8.5 (53) going into the final term.
The last quarter developed into a tense battle. Williamstown struck early to extend the margin before St Kilda closed the gap, with just one point separating the sides midway through the term. Dawson stepped up again with a crucial goal with 10 minutes remaining to give the Seagulls breathing room.
St Kilda threatened late and hit the post with two minutes to go, but Williamstown held firm in the closing stages to secure the four-point victory.
The result means Williamstown Football Club finishes the pre-season with three wins from three practice matches, building strong momentum heading into Round 1.
The Seagulls will open their 2026 campaign against Frankston Football Club on Friday, March 20 at Kinetic Stadium.
