On a breezy Sunday at IKON Park, the Seagulls held on in a thriller for the second week in a row.

Williamstown made a strong start to the contest, leading the inside 50 count 11-4 during the second quarter, and taking a 2.4 (28) to 1.3 (9) lead at quarter time.

Debutant ruckman Alex Mirkov made an immediate impact, winning the hitout battle and providing a strong presence around the ground.

Fellow debutant Diesel Moloney entered the game as the substitute in the seventh minute of the first quarter and also contributed well. Braydon Preuss was a standout from early, kicking three first-half goals before being hampered by a cramp later in the match.

At halftime, Carlton had worked their way back into the contest with a six-goal second term, taking a 7.4 (49) to 6.4 (40) lead into the main break. Mirkov’s first goal for the club, converted from directly in front provided a valuable lift for the Seagulls late in the quarter.

Momentum continued to swing in the third quarter, and by three-quarter time, Williamstown had regained control to hold a narrow lead, 10.10 (70) to Carlton’s 10.6 (66).

After Carlton kicked four consecutive goals, Josh D’Intinosante responded with two of his own, including a brilliant banana finish, helping restore momentum at a crucial stage.

The final quarter developed into a tight arm wrestle, with an influential Carlton midfield assisting the Blues press forward.

Williamstown extended their goals to Mirkov and D’Intinosante, but Carlton mounted a late surge. A crucial goal from the Blues sparked the fightback, followed by two more, bringing the margin right back. Another late shot at goal added further pressure, but the Seagulls held firm.

Despite the challenge, Williamstown’s defence stood strong. Luke Parks led the way with over 10 contested marks in a Best-on-Ground performance, helping secure the narrow five-point victory.

The Seagulls’ composure and consistency proved the difference, securing back-to-back wins against quality opposition.

Williamstown now heads into the Easter bye before returning to face Southport in their first home game of the season at DSV Stadium.
