The Seagulls travelled to the Gold Coast looking to build on consecutive victories, but despite a promising start, were unable to overcome the challenging conditions at Fankhauser Reserve.
Williamstown settled quickly after conceding the opening goal, adapting well to the fast-paced conditions following last week’s windy and muddy encounter at DSV Stadium.
The Seagulls suffered an early setback when Max Philpot was forced from the ground just 10 minutes into the opening quarter after limping off with a leg injury. Before leaving the field, Jack McHale converted a free kick from the goal square to kick Williamstown’s opening goal.
With the breeze at their backs, the Seagulls initially controlled possession, enjoying a 19-6 disposal advantage. Damon Hollow added another goal before momentum shifted late in the quarter, with Williamstown conceding three unanswered majors to trail at the first break.
Coach Justin Plapp responded with several positional changes at quarter time, moving players behind the ball to allow Mirkov greater freedom in the ruck and easier access to hit-outs.
Unfortunately, the Seagulls were unable to make the most of the favourable conditions in the second term. Despite competing strongly around the contest, Williamstown was unable to reduce the margin heading into halftime.
Jack McHale showed plenty of courage after copping a heavy elbow during the quarter, requiring treatment before returning to the contest.
Facing a significant deficit after halftime, Williamstown searched for a response in the third term. Heath Ollington provided one of the highlights of the afternoon, finishing off a strong rebound play to reduce the margin to 22 points and give the travelling Seagulls supporters renewed belief.
Newest Seagull, Ryan Jacobs also capitalised on a 50-metre penalty later in the quarter to keep Williamstown within reach, but the visitors were unable to build sustained momentum.
The Seagulls entered the final change trailing by 28 points and needing a big final quarter.
Williamstown continued to battle hard, but struggled to slow the opposition’s rapid ball movement, with repeated end-to-end transitions making it difficult to regain control of the contest.
Despite the result, there were several positives for the Seagulls. Jake Grieser was outstanding in defence, finishing with 25 disposals and 12 marks in arguably his best performance of the season, while Luke Parks continued his excellent form with nine intercept marks.
The afternoon was also overshadowed by another unfortunate injury setback for Liam Conway. After returning from a shoulder injury in Round 7, Conway again dislocated his shoulder and was assisted from the field.
Williamstown will now turn its attention to another significant challenge, returning home next week to host the reigning premiers, Footscray, at DSV Stadium.
