The Seagulls made the perfect start, kicking the opening goal of the game for a third consecutive week.
Williamstown created the early opportunities before responding with five consecutive goals to produce a stunning momentum surge.
One of the highlights of the opening quarter came from Diesel Moloney, who produced a brilliant running snap from a tight angle.
Nathan Colenso also returned to the scoresheet after going goalless the previous week, converting one of the best kicks of the afternoon from inside 50.
Williamstown’s early dominance was built around the outstanding ruck work of Alex Mirkov, whose physical presence at stoppages continually gave the midfield first use of the football.
The Seagulls also showed significant improvement with their entries inside 50, allowing all four key forwards to take strong, clean marks and apply scoreboard pressure.
At quarter time, Williamstown held a deserved 30-19 lead.
The Seagulls continued to dominate the centre clearances early in the second term as Mirkov strengthened what was becoming a best-on-ground performance.
A key theme throughout the afternoon became which side could capitalise on the other’s mistakes, with both teams creating goals directly from opposition turnovers.
When Kallan Dawson kicked his second goal of the game, it looked as though Williamstown’s dominance around stoppages might carry them to an important victory. However, momentum shifted late in the second quarter, reducing the Seagulls’ lead to just four points at halftime.
Despite missing defensive leader Luke Parks, who is expected to be sidelined for around a month, Williamstown’s defence stood up strongly throughout the afternoon.
The third quarter developed into an entertaining arm wrestle, with both sides trading goals throughout the term.
Williamstown answered with goals from Diesel Moloney and Bailey Ryan after the 10-minute mark, with Moloney’s classy snap once again standing out among the quarter’s highlights.
Tempers boiled over late in the term before the Seagulls regained the lead heading into the final quarter by just one point, setting the stage for a fierce finish.
The thrilling contest continued throughout the final term, with every centre clearance and inside 50 carrying enormous significance. Williamstown struck first through a superb snap from Heath Ollington before the lead changed hands several more times.
Inspired by the outstanding midfield work of Jack Toner and the continued dominance of Alex Mirkov in the ruck, Williamstown kicked two goals in five minutes to reclaim control of the contest. For the first time since halftime, the Seagulls had stretched their lead back into double figures and looked poised to claim a season-defining victory.
The final minutes were played at a frantic pace before Williamstown found Angus Seivers in space with just 30 seconds remaining.
The moment was enormous.
A goal would win the game. A behind would secure a draw.
His kick drifted agonisingly to the left.
After 80 minutes of gruelling football, neither side could be separated. The final siren confirmed a thrilling draw, with both teams forced to settle for two premiership points.
After last week’s disappointing performance, Williamstown showed significant improvement at both ends of the ground. The Seagulls were far stronger in attack and defence, stood up under pressure and took the game right up to one of the competition’s top sides.
Several players can take great confidence from their performances. Jack Toner was outstanding, finishing with 35 disposals and kicking two crucial fourth-quarter goals. Alex Mirkov was dominant in the ruck all afternoon, while Diesel Moloney continued his excellent form with three goals. Jake Grieser also impressed with an outstanding 34-disposal performance, while Kallan Dawson finished with two goals.
Williamstown will now look to build on the positives from this performance next week when it hosts the Tasmanian Devils at DSV Stadium in the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
