Williamstown started slowly in wet and windy conditions, with Coburg establishing an early advantage before taking a 19-point lead into the first change.
The Seagulls responded strongly in the second term, making the most of the breeze and gradually working their way back into the contest.
Kallan Dawson continued his strong second half of the season, providing a consistent target inside 50. Five minutes into the second quarter, Dawson produced a strong high mark to help give Williamstown a presence in attack.
Alex Mirkov was also influential in the ruck, with his physical presence and tap work helping Williamstown gain control around the centre. The Seagulls finished the contest with a 25-12 advantage in centre clearances.
Jack Toner provided one of the highlights of the afternoon, producing a spectacular running barrel from distance that sailed through for a goal.
Williamstown maintained possession and showed greater composure with the football as the quarter progressed, eventually drawing level before Coburg regained a narrow advantage. The Seagulls entered half-time five points behind.
Williamstown faced a difficult third quarter, with Coburg taking control of the contest and extending its lead. The Seagulls were unable to capitalise on their opportunities as the visitors established a significant advantage heading into the final term.
With the wind returning to Williamstown’s favour in the fourth quarter, the Seagulls fought their way back into the contest and controlled much of the play.
Braydon Preuss opened the term with an important goal, before further opportunities fell Williamstown’s way. Josh D’Intinosante, Jack Toner and Tom Fry were unable to convert their chances as the Seagulls struggled to turn their territorial dominance into scoreboard pressure.
Dawson continued to lead the way inside 50, adding two further goals to finish with five for the afternoon and equal his season-best haul.
Williamstown ultimately finished with more scoring shots than Coburg, but its 6.12 proved costly compared with the visitors’ 9.9. The final margin was 15 points.
Jake Greiser was one of Williamstown’s standout performers, working tirelessly through the midfield to finish with 33 disposals.
Dawson was equally impressive in attack, with his four-goal performance further highlighting his impact in front of goal during the second half of the season.
The result leaves Williamstown sitting 11th on the ladder heading into the final round. With finals rivals Tasmania and Essendon also securing victories, the Seagulls must defeat Frankston next Saturday to keep their season alive.
Williamstown will welcome the Frankston Dolphins to DSV Stadium for the final home and away game of the season, with a finals position on the line.
