The Seagulls showcased plenty of grit and determination, but ultimately fell short with a final score of 58 to 32 out at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Seagulls started strong, booting the opening goal within minutes of the first siren. Eloise Freeman and Brittney Gray impressed early with relentless pressure, smothering Sandringham’s advances in their forward 50.
Yasmin Welsford turned the tides with a crucial mark deep in defence, while Krissy Trang and Kiera Leare made vital kicks out of congestion. Izzy Khoury’s brilliant tackle around the 15-minute mark earned a free kick and set up another shift in momentum. The Seagulls maintained control and slotted a late goal before the siren.
Williamstown’s backline stood strong in the third term only allowing Sandringham to score twice. Laura Blue’s strategic punch out of bounds near goal was a key defensive highlight.
Williamstown’s best period of the match came in the fourth, with Teagan Brett leading the charge. Brett slotted two quick goals, including a stunning snap from the boundary. Sharnie Whiting capped off the quarter, marking strongly and converting from 50 metres out.
Despite a scoreless fifth period, the Seagulls kept the pressure on. Krystal Russell dominated the ball-ups, winning the majority of ruck contests and keeping Williamstown in the fight.
The Seagulls held possession in their forward half for much of the final period but were unable to capitalise. Sandringham’s late goal sealed the result despite a strong push from Williamstown.
While the final scoreline favored Sandringham, the Seagulls displayed plenty of promise ahead of the VFLW season.
The squad now turns their focus to their second and final practice match this Sunday at DSV Stadium, where they’ll take on rivals Port Melbourne at 10:00am on home turf.
