The Seagulls displayed a brave effort, however failed to match Port Melbourne, with a final score of 32 to 56 at DSV Stadium on Sunday morning.

It’s been a long pre-season for the Seagulls, and the challenges showed as structures broke down throughout the match, with the squad unable to effectively execute their intended style of play.

A lack of forward movement and drive saw them stall repeatedly, while an overuse of backward handballing only added to the pressure. Without sufficient outside run or space, the team was frequently caught in congestion, limiting their ability to generate much momentum.

Development players were rotated through the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh periods as the coaching staff trialled different combinations, but overall cohesion remained elusive.

Coaches didn’t shy away from expressing their frustration and admitted the performance fell short of the standard required for the season.

The groups succession plan was dismissed as having any impact on the result, with coaches instead pointing to execution and consistency as the core issues.

Still, there were some positives to take away – particularly in identifying key areas that will need attention before the season officially begins next week.

Neve Crowley offered a bright spot with two goals, while Emily Eaves and Mikayla Plant also hit the scoreboard.

A late change saw Amelia Marino ruled out due to illness, with Lori Stepnell returning to the side after missing last week’s practice match.

While the final score was unfavourable, the Seagulls now shift their gaze to Round 1 and the opportunity to reset.

They’ll open their season against the Western Bulldogs, taking place on Easter Sunday at 11:05am at Mission Whitten Oval.
