Williamstown has welcomed the recommitment of deputy vice captain Ellie McLinden and emerging midfielder Taelah Smith, with both players recommitting to the Seagulls for the 2027 VFLW season.

McLinden, 28, will return for her second season in blue and gold after making a strong impact both on and off the field since joining Williamstown. The 175cm defender brought significant experience to the Seagulls in 2026, having previously captained Box Hill and amassed more than 50 VFLW games throughout her career.
McLinden was welcomed into the Club’s leadership group this season, taking on the role of deputy vice captain and providing composure, organisation and strong game sense to the Seagulls’ backline. After returning from an ACL injury, McLinden managed six VFLW appearances this season, with her leadership remaining an important part of the Club’s defensive group and broader playing list.
Her experience and ability to read the game have made her a highly respected figure within the playing group, with McLinden set to continue her leadership role as the Seagulls look towards 2027.
Joining her in recommitting is 19-year-old midfielder Taelah Smith, who enjoyed a standout debut season after joining Williamstown from the Northern Territory. Smith featured in all 15 of the Seagulls’ VFLW games this season, quickly establishing herself as an exciting young talent within the Williamstown program.
The 19-year-old has shown plenty of promise through the midfield, combining her work rate and competitiveness with an ability to impact games in a number of ways. Smith produced an impressive performance in the Seagulls’ Preliminary Final against Port Melbourne, collecting 15 disposals, six marks and five tackles in a strong display on the big stage.
Her first season at DSV Stadium has provided a glimpse of what she can offer, with the Club looking forward to seeing Smith continue to develop and build her game in 2027.
The combination of McLinden’s experience and leadership with Smith’s emerging talent adds further strength to the Seagulls’ VFLW list, with both players set to play important roles in the Club’s continued development.
