Seagull Sightings at Local Level – July 5 & 6

July 10, 2025
While our VFL side extended their winning streak to eight and our VFLW side battled through a tough loss to Port Melbourne, several other Seagulls were in action across local leagues. Hamish Morrison and Megan Smart led the way, while others made strong contributions in their respective matches.

A look at six performances by Williamstown FC players in local leagues over the weekend of July 5, 2025.

Hamish Morrison – Airport West Football Club (EDFL Premier Division)

After a quieter outing last week, Hamish Morrison bounced back in a big way with a season-high 35 disposals in Airport West’s narrow 9-point loss to Aberfeldie. Recognised as one of the standout performers, Morrison had a game-high 28 kicks, while also taking 10 marks and laying eight tackles in a high-work-rate display. His ability to win the ball and impact both offensively and defensively stood out, finishing with 121 ranking points.

Max Philpot – PEGS Football Club (VAFA Premier C)

Max Philpot arguably produced his strongest performance since returning from injury, starring in PEGS’ commanding 75-point win over Glen Eira. He gathered a season-high 29 disposals (17 contested) while leading the game with five inside 50s. Philpot hit the scoreboard with two goals and finished with 118 ranking points in a well-rounded display. It was a significant step forward in his return, showing he’s quickly finding form and confidence with each outing.

Hamish Murphy – North Heidelberg Football Club (NFNL Division 1)

Hamish Murphy contributed effectively to North Heidelberg’s nail-biting 1-point win over Hurstbridge, providing solid rebound and ball use from defence. He finished with 21 disposals, including 17 kicks at 76% efficiency, and recorded a game-high nine rebound 50s. His ability to link up play and relieve pressure across half-back added value throughout the contest in another consistent showing.

Megan Smart – Williamstown CYMS Reserve Women’s (VAFA Premier Women’s Reserve)

Megan Smart played a big role for Williamstown CYMS despite their 35-point loss to Old Scotch. Post-match she was recognised for her impact with a performance full of speed, intent and effort. She moved the ball quickly and took her opportunities well, while her mindset was the perfect balance between motivation and focus. Named as an emergency for Williamstown’s VFLW side, she continues to push for selection again in season 2025.

Molly Simpson – St Kevin’s Senior Women’s (VAFA Premier Women’s)

Molly Simpson was instrumental in St Kevin’s 41-point win over Beaumaris, hitting the scoreboard with a goal to add to her two from last week. Throughout the game, she consistently got herself into smart positions to create scoring opportunities and supported her teammates with clear communication and energy around the ground. Unfortunately, late in the second half, Simpson sustained an injury to her right knee — a disappointing blow as she was on the cusp of VFLW selection once again. The extent of her injury will be confirmed in this week’s injury update on Friday.

Bronte Ashworth – West Brunswick Senior Women’s (VAFA Premier Women’s)

Bronte Ashworth featured for West Brunswick on Saturday, who fell to Caulfield Grammarians by 44 points. Determined to leave her mark, Ashworth wasn’t going to let her side go goalless as she delivered their only major in the final quarter. While Caulfield pulled away with five goals in the last term to seal a commanding win, she held her own in the ruck and was named among West Brunswick’s best. She set a clear goal to hit the scoreboard, and she did just that. With minor improvements to be made in her tackling accuracy, Ashworth remains a promising ruck to watch at local level.
