As cold winter winds swept across DSV Stadium, Williamstown began the second half of its season in emphatic fashion. The Seagulls got on the board early through Kallan Dawson before piling on five goals in the opening stages to take immediate control of the contest.
One of the highlights of the first quarter came from Jake Grieser, whose booming torpedo from beyond 60 metres put an exclamation mark on a dominant opening term. Williamstown took full advantage of the breeze, controlling territory and repeatedly forcing the ball inside 50.
Luke Parks was outstanding behind the ball, collecting five intercept marks in the opening quarter alone, while Kallan Dawson’s strong marking proved a constant target inside forward 50. Dawson booted three first-quarter goals, equalling the tally he kicked against GWS the previous week in just one quarter.
The result was a commanding start, with Williamstown piling on 7.2 (44) to establish a 33-point lead at the first break.
Meanwhile, while the match was unfolding in Williamstown, two former Seagulls were making headlines at AFL level. Joel Fitzgerald and Hugo Hall-Kahan, who were both playing for Williamstown just five weeks ago, lined up against one another for Melbourne and Adelaide’s clash at Adelaide Oval.
The second quarter proved a greater challenge as the conditions shifted. While Williamstown’s defence remained strong and managed to generate several scoring opportunities of its own, the visitors began to take advantage of the breeze and worked their way back into the contest.
Despite surrendering some momentum, the Seagulls entered halftime with a 10-point lead after the opposition registered seven set shots but managed just three goals.
As the third quarter began, the sun emerged and transformed the ground into a bright winter afternoon.
Diesel Moloney quickly got on the board with his first goal of the game as Williamstown looked to make full use of the breeze.
The Seagulls continued to attack and create opportunities, but their execution initially let them down, missing four set shots during the first half of the quarter.
The turning point arrived moments later.
A desperate Williamstown smother was followed by a 50-metre penalty, allowing Moloney to kick one of his goals of the season. The major relieved pressure and reignited the home side’s momentum.
From there, the Seagulls exploded.
Heath Ollington kicked two goals in quick succession as Williamstown began to overwhelm the contest. The pressure, territory game and repeated inside-50 entries that had been building throughout the afternoon finally translated onto the scoreboard.
Williamstown slammed on five goals in a devastating burst, including two to Ollington and a brilliant snap from Ryan Jacobs. The lead ballooned to 51 points by three-quarter time and effectively put the result beyond doubt.
The visitors continued to fight throughout the final quarter, but Williamstown remained in control.
Diesel Moloney added his third goal of the afternoon, putting the finishing touches on an impressive team performance. Although the final margin narrowed late, the Seagulls still recorded their biggest victory since their dominant Round 4 win over Southport.
The 37-point win reflected a strong all-round effort, highlighted by an explosive finish to the third quarter that ultimately decided the contest.
Kallan Dawson continued his outstanding recent form. After kicking five goals against Port Melbourne two weeks ago, he again proved a focal point in attack, finishing with five goals and providing a strong aerial presence throughout the afternoon.
Another major factor in the victory was the dominance of Alex Mirkov and Braydon Preuss in the ruck. The duo gave Williamstown a huge advantage around stoppages, helping the Seagulls win centre clearances 67-28 and providing the midfield with first use throughout the afternoon.
Toby Triffett also continued his steady rise. While his season has been a gradual build, his 24-disposal performance was one of his most influential games of the year. Coach Justin Plapp will undoubtedly gain further confidence in using Triffett through the midfield after such a strong display.
Now riding a two-game winning streak, the Seagulls will head interstate for the first time this season when they travel to Southport ths week for a highly anticipated rematch with the Sharks.
