Williamstown’s VFL side hit the ground running in their first practice match of the 2025 pre-season, delivering a dominant performance against the Northern Bullants in sweltering conditions at RMIT Oval, Bundoora, on Saturday morning.
The match provided the perfect opportunity for the squad to shake off the off-season rust and give new recruits valuable time in a blue and gold match setting.
Coaches also took the chance to experiment with new combinations. With the temperature reaching high 30’s as expected, they wisely fielded a squad of 35 players, allowing many to play only a half.
Despite the scoreboard not being the primary focus of the outing, the Seagulls proved their capabilities with a comprehensive 66-point lead by the final siren.
The side registered 29 scoring shots to the Bullants’ 8, reflecting their dominance in the contest.
The heat took its toll on both teams, causing some fatigue throughout the match, but fortunately, Williamstown emerged without any injuries.
Among the many fresh faces taking the field, Blake Fitzgerald stood tall in defence, accompanying his brother; second year Seagull, Joel Fitzgerald. Both played exceptional roles in the backline.
Up forward, Jack Brown and Brodie McLaughlin led the goal-scoring effort with two each, while another ten players hit the scoreboard in an even team contribution.
With the first practice match complete, attention now turns to this Saturday, March 1, where the Seagulls will take on Coburg as part of the 2025 Smithy’s VFL Victorian Standalones Practice Match Carnival.
The six Victorian standalone VFL clubs will take part in a triple-header at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, with Williamstown’s clash set for 1:30pm.
The coaching team will take a different approach to this match, opting for a smaller squad to ensure players receive extended game time.
It will be another important hit-out as the squad continues its preparations for the upcoming VFL season commencing March 22.
