Seagulls make a statement in their first home game against the Sharks

Williamstown returned from the break in strong fashion, recording a 53-point win over last year's grand finalist Southport at DSV Stadium.

It as a statement to the rest of the competition, influenced by a seven goals to one first quarter despite the two-week break.

There were positive signs early as the Seagulls outhunted the Sharks in midfield stoppages.

One of the biggest reasons for this dominant performance was N. Colenso, who finished with five goals, including a boundary side finish early in the first quarter.

His presence inside 50 provided difficult to contain, earning him the nickname “Goalenso” by the final siren.

A. Seivers produced his best game in blue and gold colours, kicking four goals in the first-half and showcasing his impact up forward.

Williamstown’s elite pressure, led by vice-captain C. Polson, restricted Southport to just 19 points at half-time, with the margin continuing to build.

Southport lifted their intensity in the third quarter, evening up the contest for a period as the game turned into an arm wrestle. The Sharks made key positional adjustments, including moving a ruckman into defence to add an extra number behind the ball.

However, inaccuracy proved costly, with Southport registering 10 behinds from fourteen scoring shots by the final break.

In the last quarter, H. Ollington slotted a steady goal five minutes in to halt any momentum from the Sharks. J. D’Intinosante added two of his own, while J. McHale marked his 50th club game with a late goal to put the finishing touch on a commanding win.

L. parks was onc again among the best for Williamstown, finishing with 19 disposals and 13 marks, while J. Fitzgerald had his best game of the season with 35 disposals.

The fans enjoyed every bit of it, with over 1,000 in attendance for Williamstown’s first home game of the season. In ideal conditions at DSV Stadium, the Seagulls delivered a performance hat sets them up strongly heading into next week’s ANZAC Night clash with Werribee.
