Saturday morning footy saw a tight opening term before the Seagulls took control in the second quarter, going on to secure their sixth victory of the year in an assertive display.
Defender Zoe Day celebrated a major milestone, running out for her 50th game in Williamstown colours.
An unchanged lineup once again led the team to victory.
A tight opening term saw both sides locked in a scrappy, constant pressure, forcing limited shots on goal for both teams.
Williamstown held their shape, all over the ground; however, they were unable to convert on the scoreboard, with scores remaining level at the first break, 0-0.
Darebin broke the deadlock early in the second term, registering the first goal of the match three minutes into the quarter, after a scoreless opening.
Minutes later, the Seagulls were in attack; however, they were unable to convert, kicking two points in a row.
The Seagulls’ relentless pressure soon turned the momentum, forcing repeated turnovers across the ground. Lilu Hung sparked the play with a clever run and kick inside 50, as Teagan Brett was waiting at the fall of the ball, gathering cleanly and snapping truly for Williamstown’s first goal of the match.
Moments later, midfielder Megan Williamson was rewarded with a free kick before slotting through Williamtown’s second goal of the quarter.
Williamson’s goal gave the Seagulls momentum and a boost, heading into halftime, taking a 9-point lead.
The Seagulls had intentions of heading into the forward 50 but struggled to capitalise on their opportunities.
Meanwhile, Darebin did, kicking their second goal of the match nine minutes into the third.
Responding quickly, Williamstown surged from the centre clearance, as forward Gaby De Angelis beat her opponent to extend the lead to 10 points, entering the last quarter.
The Falcons were the first to answer in the fourth, with a soccer-like goal off the ground to squeeze Williamstown’s lead back to 5 points.
Fourteen minutes into the fourth quarter, Williamtown were able to extend the lead once again by 12 points, as captain Eliza Straford hunted the ball, giving Mia Zielinski every chance to kick a snap to increase the lead.
Shortly after, Straford cleverly stole the ball from the Falcons, kicking her first of the match and ultimately closing out the game.
Megan Williamson was very effective in this game, collecting 12 disposals (8 contested), a team high in tackles (12), and a goal.
Defenders Naomi Ferres and Zara Guss also provided a spark as Ferres gained 12 disposals and 11 tackles. Guss managed 13 disposals and 8 tackles.
Williamstown’s Ruck duo of Georgia Howes and Krystal Russell once again proved to be too strong, gathering 52 hit outs combined. Although they had limited disposals of the ball, they created a major impact on the game.
Williamstown will look to their next game, against the Western Bulldogs next Saturday at DSV Stadium at 10:05am, aiming to get their sixth consecutive win.
