At midday this Sunday, Jack Toner will play his 50th game for the Williamstown Football Club against the Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval.
Toner, who debuted for the Seagulls in 2021, has packed a lot into 50 games over his four-season tenure, having developed from a back pocket star to a promising midfielder and now a dynamic half-forward.
His time spent under the guidance of our General Manager of Football, Jeff Andrews, at Central District in South Australia in 2020 laid a strong foundation for his role as a small defender. Andrews recalls Toner’s exciting potential, noting his defensive prowess and ability to stand out at such a young age.
Despite the challenges posed by his ACL injury in 2022, which saw him sidelined for the season, Toner made an impressive comeback, racking up 20 games in 2023. His consistency earned him the titles of Most Improved Player and Most Promising Player, solidifying his reputation as the player to watch in 2024.
Toner transitioned to the wing in 2023 before excelling in a half-forward role this year. Having recorded 20 or more disposals 13 times throughout his time at Williamstown and averaging 18 disposals per game in 2024, Toner has proven himself to be a ball magnet all over the ground. However, one of his most remarkable moments saw him up front in Round 2 against Coburg when his set shot won us the game after the siren.
Join us this Sunday at Box Hill City Oval to get behind Jack Toner and support the Seagulls in what will be a crucial contest. With the Box Hill Hawks sitting 6th on the ladder and us just one spot below in 7th, this one is vital for our final’s aspirations.
