22nd June 2024
By Jaryn Makepeace, Williamstown Media
Werribee were able to get revenge against Williamstown in a tight battle and Zac Pritchard played his first game in the blue and gold since 2023.
After a long wait without the first goal, Corey Ellison cut off a kick from Werribee and slotted the first of the game. Williamstown looked hot early with lots of good pressure. Blake Coleman, who was a late call-up, kicked a very nice goal with some great forward craft. After Werribee levelled the scores at 13 each, Toby Triffett kicked a nice set shot which started a scuffle. Williamstown led the first quarter by five. Williamstown had the best passage of play topped off with Corey Rich unselfishly centring the ball to Noah Gadsby, who gave Williamstown the lead 39 to 22. Werribee answered with a free kick, making the scores 6.3.39 to 4.6.30 at halftime.
Although Werribee had more of the ball, the Seagulls’ pressure was unbelievable with 38 tackles before halftime. After exiting the team line-up two weeks ago, Blake Coleman came in with a point to prove, kicking his third goal in the first minute of the third quarter. Williamstown were looking much better than previous weeks but struggled to put scoreboard pressure on, kicking three points early in the third quarter. Werribee built up a few points themselves, but they were able to kick two goals in quick succession as they started to get on top of the Seagulls. Cameron Polson kicked a much-needed captain’s goal for the Seagulls. Williamstown led by 10 at three-quarter time.
Werribee kicked six goals to one in the fourth quarter. Williamstown once again struggled to play four quarters, this one costing them another loss, making it three losses in the last four games. Williamstown will go into a bye week and will need to find a way to play four quarters to lock in their finals chances as they are 7th after Round 13.
