Williamstown travelled up north to face reigning premiers, the Gold Coast Suns. Coming off a bye, Williamstown was desperate to find some good form.

It took five minutes for the Seagulls to get their first inside 50, as the Suns dominated possession early. However, James Cousins managed to kick his first goal of the year, giving Williamstown their first of the game. Despite their control, the Suns only managed three points before finally kicking their first goal at the ten-minute mark to snatch the lead. Gold Coast continued to dominate, and Williamstown found themselves fortunate to be down by only 12 points. Harrison Minton-Connell had some strong plays in the backline, providing a runoff half-back that led to Brodie McLaughlin’s first goal, boosting the Seagulls’ scoreboard. The Suns left the door open by kicking eight behinds in the first quarter. Williamstown’s defensive pressure was a positive, especially as the ball kept re-entering the D50.

Gold Coast started the second quarter just like the first, kicking three points in a row. Williamstown finally managed to move forward, but it only resulted in a behind. Jack Brown, whether intentional or not, set up Brodie McLaughlin’s second goal with a soccer assist. Williamstown then had a brief period of dominating possession and capitalised by kicking another goal through Nathan Colenso, but Gold Coast responded almost instantly. Rain began to fall as the second quarter ended, with the first half finishing with Gold Coast leading by just three points, 31 to 28.

Williamstown came out fighting at the start of the third quarter, with Jovan Petric kicking a big barrel. The Seagulls kept the pressure on, kicking another goal to take an eight-point lead. However, the Suns went coast-to-coast and regained the lead. Gold Coast regained momentum and stretched the lead to 22 points before three-quarter time.

Williamstown started each quarter of the game by kicking the first goal, and the fourth quarter was no different, keeping them in the game. Jack Brown then kicked a great set shot, reducing the deficit to 11 points. However, Gold Coast regained control and kicked three goals in a row, resulting in a 27-point win.

Williamstown suffered another disappointing loss, knocking them down to ninth on the ladder. They hope to bounce back against Sandringham at home in Round 16.
