Williamstown faced their toughest test yet against top of the ladder rivals, the Footscray Bulldogs, just ahead of the Seagulls by percentage.

Turnover off the back half gave Footscray the only goal in the first term. Skill errors let the Seagulls down – lots of opportunities to score having had most of the possession but were only able to kick just five points for the quarter. Footscray led by 2 at quarter time.

Finn O’Dwyer had a great attempt at stopping Oskar Baker from running into an open goal. Another missed opportunity led to Footscray bouncing back and kicking their second for the quarter. Noah Gadsby was able to intercept very well kicking inside 50. The stoppage was then forced, and Liam Conway was able to show off his soccer skills putting through Williamstown’s first, stopping a five-goal run by the dogs. Footscray then piled on two more goals to give them a 36-point lead at the half.

Great transition by the Seagulls led to Blake Coleman kicking his first and Williamstown’s second. Corey Rich was then able to slot the second bringing the lead to 26 points. Continuing the strong quarter, Nick Ebinger slotted an amazing goal from the boundary which cut the lead down to 20. Williamstown were able to keep Footscray goalless in the third term. With a quarter to go, Williamstown were only down by 21 points.

Footscray then kicked the first three goals of the final quarter which shut the door on the Seagull’s comeback who now trailed by 42. Corey Rich then crumbed the pack perfectly and kicked his second which was then followed by Jack Toner who kicked the Seagulls second goal of the quarter trimming the score to 30 points. Footscray then kicked two goals in a row to finish the game.

With skill errors and early misses on the scoreboard, it was a tough loss for the Seagulls against the very talented Footscray side, but they hope bounce back on Anzac Day when they take on western suburb rivals, Werribee.
