VFL Team Selection: An open spot for Philpot

July 11, 2025
Williamstown’s will welcome back a much-loved name this weekend, with Max Philpot set to play his first VFL game of the 2025 season in Sunday’s Round 16 clash with the Northern Bullants.

Philpot, who suffered a broken ankle in the off-season, has been steadily working his way back to the game.

After exiting the rehab group, he pieced together four strong performances with PEGS in the VAFA, with last weekend’s effort leaving no doubt he was ready to return to VFL level.

In PEGS’ 75-point win over Glen Eira, Philpot was a clear standout, collecting a season-high 29 disposals—17 of those contested—while adding two goals, five inside 50s, and finishing with a game-high 118 ranking points.

Senior Coach Justin Plapp says Philpot has earned his spot back in the 23 after building confidence each week at local level.

“Max is a big part of our group and someone who’s given a lot to the footy club. I’m looking forward to having him back in our colours this weekend.”

Philpot played 17 games in 2024 and has now tallied 74 for Williamstown, meaning Sunday’s appearance will bring him three-quarters of the way to his 100th game in the blue and gold.

Having been at the club for nearly a decade and never pulling on another VFL guernsey, Philpot’s return will be a welcome one for teammates and supporters alike.

Tom Downie also returns to the lineup after being a late withdrawal just minutes before the bounce in last Saturday’s win over Port Melbourne.

Managing some minor soreness, Downie now slots back into the side and is set to resume his ruck duties.

Oscar Sasalu, who stepped in as a late inclusion for Downie, retains his spot for what will be his second VFL appearance of the season.

Sasalu be joined by Lucas Impey, who had 24 hitouts and 13 disposals last week and will again support in the ruck rotation.

The Seagulls will be without Jake Greiser, who will be managed, while Blake Coleman comes out of the side following a quad injury sustained during the third quarter of last week’s match.

With co-skipper Cameron Polson remaining in the side, it marks the second straight week the full leadership group will be taking the field together—an important element as the Seagulls continue to push into the business end of the season.

Williamstown will be chasing their ninth consecutive win on Sunday, aiming to bring their winning streak into double digits. But the challenge won’t be taken lightly, with the Northern Bullants, despite sitting last on the ladder, coming off an interstate win over the Sydney Swans in Round 15.

The clash forms part of a double header, with our VFLW side taking on Darebin earlier in the day at 10:35am. The VFL match will follow at 2:05pm at Genis Steel Oval, rounding out a full day of Seagulls football.
