VFL Team Selection: Two changes in Greiser’s 150th

July 22, 2025
Williamstown will return home to DSV Stadium on Sunday for one of the most anticipated match days of the season, as the Seagulls host ladder-leaders Box Hill at 2.05pm.

Headlining the inclusions is, of course, milestone man Jake Greiser, who will run out for his 150th game in the blue and gold.

The 12-year Seagull is no stranger to the brown and gold either — having been a part of the Development League premiership over Box Hill back in 2015.

That triumph will be celebrated earlier in the day during the Club’s Premiership Reunion Luncheon, which also commemorates our 2005 Reserves and 2015 VFL premierships.

Greiser was managed last week against the Northern Bullants, a decision that opened the door for Max Philpot to play his first game of the season.

Philpot, who returned from a six-month ankle injury, retains his spot after finishing with 11 touches and two clearances.

Also back in the mix is ruckman Tom Downie, who returns after being a late withdrawal two weeks running.

Meanwhile, last week’s late inclusions James Cousins and Ned Pendergast have both done enough to hold their places.

In his long-awaited return to football from a knee injury sustained in Round 3, Cousins finished Round 16 with seven disposals and two tackles.

Pendergast, who made his debut this year in April, will prepare for for his third VFL game, continuing to assist the backline in the absence of Co-Captain Finn O’Dwyer, who remains sidelined with a bicep injury.

The boys will still be led by Co-Captain Cameron Polson, who was best on ground last week despite a disappointing final quarter fade-out that saw our first loss since Anzac Day.

From last week’s side, Oscar Sasalu has been omitted after playing two consecutive games for the Seagulls, while Tom Mundy will miss through illness.

The task this week doesn’t get any easier, with Box Hill having dropped just two games for the season.

A win would be a massive boost for Williamstown, who currently sit sixth on the ladder, locked on points with fifth, seventh, and eighth — separated only by percentage.

Sunday’s clash won’t just be about the bounce at 2.05pm though — it’s shaping up as a day full of celebrations.

In the earlier VFLW game at 11.05am, Vice-Captain Emily Eaves will play her 50th game for the Club, while Captain Eliza Straford will make her long-awaited return after recovering from an ACL injury.

Saturday will also be CEO Ashley Baker’s final game day in the role, bringing an end to a significant chapter in the Club’s leadership.

With two huge matches and a handful of off-field celebrations, there’s no better excuse to park yourself at DSV Stadium all day and soak in all the Seagulls have to offer.
