There were loud cheers at DSV Stadium on Wednesday night as the news was shared in front of the playing group, marking a special milestone for Jemima Wrigley, Gaby De Angelis, Ruby Mahony, Izzy Khoury, Krissy Trang, and Georgia Howes – all of whom will pull on the blue and gold for the first time.
“We’ve added players who are the best in their competitions and are able to fill roles,” said Senior Coach Liam Cavanagh, highlighting that the club has retained its core group from last season while adding talent across the field.
Among the additions is Mahony, who arrived from Essendon VFLW, Khoury, from Carlton VFLW, and Wrigley and De Angelis, who both crossed from the VFLW side at the Southern Saints.
Trang, a three-time league best and fairest winner from Burnside Heights in the EDFL, has also been selected after joining the club earlier this year.
“I sent [Trang] a message three years ago after she won a best and fairest medal,” Cavanagh said. “She only got back to me a month ago. She is VFLW level – the timing has worked out well.”
Georgia Howes has been a standout in the ruck during the off-season and has proved a reliable partner to seasoned ruck Cat O’Bryan, while skipper Eliza Straford and key defender Zoe Day are still to return from injury.
Joining the fresh faces are emerging young guns Ella Tyson, Mia D’Agostino, Megan Smart, and Kiera Leare, who – after only a handful of games between them in season 2024 – have all earned their spot in the starting line-up following hard-working pre-seasons.
Williamstown heads into Round 1 with plenty of lessons in hand, having played two six-quarter practice matches against Sandringham and Port Melbourne.
